Biography

Professor Emeritus of Cello/Bowling Green State University (OH); former Associate Dean/College of Musical Arts; Adjunct Faculty/Ohio Northern University; a native of Austin, TX; BM, MM, DMA degrees from The University of Texas (Austin); studied with Horace Britt, Adolphe Frezin and George Neikrug; master classes with Leonard Rose and Andre Navarra; performed under the baton of such composers as Igor Stravinsky, Aaron Copland, Hugh Ross (Conductor/New York Schola Cantorum), Leroy Anderson; USA Southwest tour with Henri Mancini  Orchestra; member/ US Air Force Academy Strings (CO Springs) and US Air Force Band (Washington, DC); formerly on the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; visiting professor of cello at the Oberlin Conservatory and the University of Arizona; winner of several national artist competitions and soloist with the Houston, Shreveport, Abilene (TX), Midland/Odessa (TX), Lima (OH), MoPok Philharmonic and Brahms Chamber Orchestra (S. Korea), Sibiu Philharmonic (Romania) and Filharmonica de Jalisco (Mexico) orchestras and others in Denver, Philadelphia, Kansas City and Washington, DC; solo recitals throughout the United States including the Phillips Collection and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; represented the United States in a concert cycle of international piano/cello duos sponsored by the Bellas Artes Concert Series in Mexico City; other performances have included the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall and the Canadian National Exhibition (Toronto); guest master classes at La Escuela Nacional de Musica (University of Mexico), Shanghai and Sichuan Conservatories of Music (Peoples Republic of China); cellist with the Colorado Springs, Corpus Christi and North Carolina Symphonies; principal cello/ Austin Symphony (TX); judge for The Leonard Rose International Cello Competition; clinician at the National String Workshop (Madison, WI); clinician/The Mid-West International Band and Orchestra Conference (Chicago); guest artist with the Lancaster Festival (OH), the Chapel Hill Chamber Music Festival (NC), International Corfu (Greece) Festival and Chautauqua Institution (NY); tours and performances in  Belgium, Brazil, Canada, The Peoples Republic of China, Germany, Greece, S. Korea, Mexico, The Netherlands, Romania, Spain and Taiwan as cellist of The Guarneri Duo (Alan Smith/Cello; Diana Barker Smith/Piano/deceased); represented the State of Ohio at the Millennium Stage State Days Concert Series at the Kennedy Center and on Capitol Hill (Washington, DC); recorded on the Mutual, Columbia, Access, KVR Classics Limited and ASUC labels.
